31 March 1967 (age 58) The 2012-13 season will be Agustin Moreno’s eighth as head coach of the USF women’s tennis team. In Moreno’s seven seasons, the Bulls have amassed an 94-63 dual match record (.600), claimed the 2007 BIG EAST Championship –USF’s first in the conference in any sport– and made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament. A total of 10 players have earned 16 All-BIG EAST honors in Moreno’s previous six years, including two who were named the BIG EAST Player of the Year. Shadisha Robinson took home the honor in 2007 and Irene Rehberger followed in 2011. Moreno was named the league’s coach of the year in 2007 as well. USF has never finished worse than fifth among 12 teams in the BIG EAST under Moreno, and has been the runner-up four times. The eighth-year coach has also tutored numerous individuals and doubles tandems to top-100 final ITA rankings and as far as the NCAA quarterfinals, where Neyssa Etienne and Gabriela Duch competed as a doubles tandem in 2006. The Bulls’ 2012 squad posted a 17-9 dual match mark against one of the toughest schedules in the country that included 11 of 23 matches against opponents who ended the season in the national rankings. Some Bulls earned individual recognition, junior Ecaterina Vasenina and sophomore Loreto Alonso-Martinez were named All-BIG-EAST. USF came just short of a BIG EAST title in 2012, ending the season as the runner-up. Vasenina was included in the 64-woman NCAA Individual Championship field. The 2011 Bulls were also recognized by the NCAA for their Academic Progress Rate and maintained the highest GPA among all women’s sports at USF. Moreno made the move to USF from the University of Georgia, where he served as assistant coach for three years alongside head coach Manuel Diaz. While at Georgia, Moreno helped start the recruiting process of current ATP pro John Isner and he worked with the former Bulldog from 2003-2005. Moreno was in the national spotlight when he helped Georgia advance to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals in 2004-05 and concluded the year ranked No. 7 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. The roster featured the No. 1 ranked and NCAA Champion doubles tandem and several other nationally ranked singles players. Prior to Georgia, Moreno spent two seasons as an assistant at Texas Christian University, helping the Horned Frogs to a No. 2 national ranking and a Western Athletic Conference championship. TCU concluded the year 24-4 and advanced to the semifinals of both the ITA National Indoor Championship and NCAA Championship. Moreno’s extensive coaching resume also includes a wealth of international experience guiding women’s programs. For five years he served as the head coach of the Mexican Women’s Federation Cup Team (1999-2003) and during that time also mentored Mexico’s Women’s Continental Cup Team (2001), an 18-and-under squad, and Women’s Pan-American Team (2004). The Federation Cup is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup on the men’s side. Moreno’s international experience also includes a stint as an assistant with the Mexican Davis Cup Team. He also directed the Mexican 14-and-under World Youth Cup squad in Japan. Moreno played one season (1985-86) at Pepperdine, earning a No. 4 national ranking in doubles and helping the Waves to the national indoor title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship title match. Before arriving at Pepperdine, he was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles as a junior and was the doubles champion at Junior Wimbledon in 1985. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native enjoyed a successful professional career on the ATP tour, which spanned from 1987-1994. He was a doubles semifinalist at the 1988 French Open and also participated in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Moreno was a member of Mexico’s Davis Cup Team (1985-94) and owns career singles wins over Thomas Muster and Petr Korda. A 2002 graduate of Texas Christian University, Moreno earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations. Moreno is married to the former Beatriz Lomei. The couple has two sons, Agustin and Daniel.
