Sir Dom Álvaro Vaz de Almada, 1st Count of Avranches (in Portuguese: Conde de Abranches), KG, was born around 1390, in Alverca do Ribatejo, a city in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal. He died on 20 May 1449 at the Battle of Alfarrobeira. He was one of the noblest figures of Portuguese history, a true symbol of bravery, loyalty, and dedication, with the spirit and ethos of a medieval knight. He appeared at a time when the first light of the European Renaissance reached Portugal. His likeness appeared on the now-obsolete Portuguese five-escudo banknote.
