Anthony Richard Birley (8 October 1937 – 19 December 2020) was a British ancient historian, archaeologist and academic. He was the Professor of Ancient History at the University of Manchester (1974–1990) and at University of Düsseldorf (1990–2002). He was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1969; Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute in 1981; Member of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften 1994-2002; Member of the School of Historical Studies, Institute of Advanced Study; Trustee of the Vindolanda Trust since 1970. He was the son of the archaeologist Eric Birley, who bought the house next to Vindolanda where Anthony and his brother Robin began to excavate the site.
