About

edit

Anthony Johnson (c. 1600 – 1670) was an African American man born in Angola who achieved wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. He is most known for the fact that he was the first person to own a slave as recognized by the Virginia courts. It is notable to recognize that he himself was an African American. Held as an indentured servant in 1621, he earned his freedom after several years, and was granted land by the colony.
