Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri (Arabic: أيمن محمد ربيع الظواهري, ʾAyman Muḥammad Rabīʿ aẓ-Ẓawāhirī; June 19, 1951 – July 30, 2022) was an Egyptian-born physician and theologian who was the leader of terrorist group al-Qaeda from June 2011 until his death in July 2022. He succeeded Osama bin Laden following his death, and was a former member and senior official of Islamist organizations which have orchestrated attacks in Asia, Africa, and also some in North America and Europe. In 2012, he called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners in Muslim countries.
