Demetrius I (Greek: Δημήτριοςa) also called Demetrius the Great and Dharmamita, was an important Greco-Bactrian/Indo-Greek king (reigned c. 200–180 BC) who conquered a large part of India. Demetrius was the son of illustrious rulers Queen Laodice(daughter of Diodotus) and her consort, Euthydemus ascending to the throne around 200 BC, after which he expanded the Bactrian territories to their greatest extent westwards into Parthia and south into the Indus (modern day Pakistan) and further into India, reaching Baruch, creating the short lived Diodotian Empire. To solidify his claim to India, Demetrius married the exiled daughter of the last Mauryan emperor, Brihadratha, with whom Demetrius II was born to.
