Edmund Valentine White III (January 13, 1940 – June 3, 2025) was an American novelist, memoirist, playwright, biographer, and essayist. He portrayed gay life with candor, shaping LGBTQ+ and gay literature after the Stonewall riots, and his work is noted for its depth and elegance. It includes the semi-autobiographical trilogy A Boy's Own Story (1982), The Beautiful Room Is Empty (1988), and The Farewell Symphony (1997). He also co-authored The Joy of Gay Sex (1977), promoting sex-positive discourse within an emerging LGBTQ community.
