Captain Gladstone Adams (16 May 1880 – 26 July 1966) was a former chairman of Whitley Bay Urban District Council, but is noted in some circles for his invention of the windscreen wiper (known in the United States as the windshield wiper) - though Mary Anderson was granted her first patent for an automatic car window cleaning device controlled from inside the car, called the windshield wiper in November 1903.
