James Mark Dakin Purnell (born 2 March 1970) is the Director of Strategy and Digital at the BBC being appointed to the post in February 2013. He was a British Labour Party politician, as the Member of Parliament for Stalybridge and Hyde (MP) from 2001 to 2010 general elections, previously serving as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport from 2007 to 2009, resigning from the Government on 4 June 2009, criticising the leadership of Gordon Brown.
