James Varni Panetta (born October 1, 1969) is an American politician from the state of California. A member of the Democratic Party, he is a member of the United States House of Representatives for California's 20th congressional district. The district includes much of California's Central Coast, including Monterey, Salinas, Santa Cruz, and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Panetta was first elected in 2016, after working as a deputy district attorney for Monterey County. He is the son of former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.
