John Calvin Coolidge Sr. (March 31, 1845 – March 18, 1926) was an American politician and businessman from Vermont, and the father of J. Calvin Coolidge Jr., the 30th President of the United States. He administered the presidential oath of office to his son, the 29th Vice President of the United States, at their family homestead on the early morning of August 3, 1923, following the death of President Warren G. Harding. He is thus the only person to have sworn in a descendent or close relative to the office, and one of three persons to have administered the oath to Coolidge, who had a publicised oath upon returning to Washington.
