Kapiʻolani (December 31, 1834 – June 24, 1899) was the queen and consort of Mōʻī (king) David Kalākaua of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, reigning from 1874 to 1891 until his death when she became known as the Dowager Queen Kapiʻolani. Deeply interested in the health and welfare of the Native Hawaiian people, Kapiʻolani established the Kapiʻolani Home for Girls, for the education of the daughters of resident of the leprosy settlement at Kalaupapa, and the Kapiʻolani Maternity Home, where Hawaiian mothers and newborns could receive care.
