Mary Malahele-Xakana (1917–1982) was the first black woman to register as a medical doctor in South Africa (in 1947), as well as a founding member of the Young Women’s Christian Association. Her father had been driven from his home for refusing to put his twin children to death, since twins were considered a curse. Later, Mary was the first recipient of the Native Trust Fund to study as a medical doctor. She practiced as a township general practitioner with a special interest in tuberculosis patients.
