Rafael López (born August 8, 1961 in Mexico City, Mexico) is an internationally recognized illustrator and artist. The illustrations created by López bring diverse characters to children’s books and he works to produce and promote books that reflect and honor the lives of all young people. As a children’s book illustrator, he has received three Pura Belpré Award medals from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and REFORMAin 2020 for Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln, Drum Dream Girl in 2016 and Book Fiesta! in 2010. He was chosen by the Library of Congress to create the National Book Festival Poster and has been a featured book festival speaker at this event.
