Randy Brush was a rising star in the New York City jazz scene in the early 1980s. Growing up in San Diego, he played drums in a local San Diego act called "The Bright Side", as well as scoring Superior ratings at state-wide rudimental snare drum competitions. In addition, as a teenager he joined the So. California State Honor Band one year. The "Bright Side" was a group directed by Don Ward, whose son Kelly Ward (also in the group) would continue on to fame in Grease (film) Another cast member, Brian Stokes Mitchell went on to win a Tony Award for "Ragtime". This experience with tap-dancers would influence his drumset technique forever.
