Lieutenant Commander Richard S. Baron, United States Navy, was killed March 15, 1942 during the bombing of Cebu City, Philippines. Prior to his death, he had received the Navy Cross for risking his life to recover classified documents during the bombardment of Cavite, Philippines. His namesake, the USS Baron (DE-166), a destroyer escort, was commissioned July 5, 1943. The commissioning was witnessed and sponsored by his widow, Mrs. Anne P. Baron.
