Richard Louis Trumka (July 24, 1949 – August 5, 2021) was an American attorney and organized labor leader. He was elected president of the AFL-CIO on September 16, 2009, at the federation's convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served as the secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO from 1995 to 2009, and prior to that was president of the United Mine Workers from 1982 to 1995. Trumka was named one of Esquire Magazine's Americans of the Year in 2011. In early 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Trumka to serve as commissioner of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, but Trumka died on August 5 before he could be confirmed by the Senate.
