Shawki al-Badani was a U.S Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). Al-Badani was the Emir of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in the Al-Bayda region. In 2012, al-Badani assigned an AQAP fighter to target the U.S. embassy in Sanaa for attacks. He also has been described as being connected to a suicide bomber who killed over 100 Yemeni soldiers in a May 2012 attack. He also played a key role in a plan for a major attack in the summer of 2013 that led the United States to close 19 diplomatic posts across the Middle East and Africa. Al-Badani was on Yemen’s Most Wanted list and the Yemeni government has offered a $100,000 reward for anyone who can offer information about him, describing him as one of “the most dangerous terrorists affiliated with al-Qaida.” The US Department of State was also offering a $5 million reward for information that helped to capture him. In 12 of December 2013, a US drone strike killed 12 and injured 14 others in a wedding party, targeting al-Badani, but did not succeed into killing him, and the terrorist escaped only wounded by the attack. About a year later, in November 3, 2014, an unidentified drone strike killed Badani, alongside another commander of al-Bayda province, Nabil al-Dahab, in the Rada'a District. AQAP later issued a statement acknowledging their commanders death, and accused US and Houthis for the drone strikes. One day later, AQAP forces battled Houthi forces in Rada'a, killing at least 10 Houthis. In retaliation, a suspected US drone strike killed some 10-20 Al-Qaeda, among two AQAP chief bombmakers, Ayyash al Eid and Ahmad Jarallah.
