About

edit

Tom Carney is a former member of the Ohio General Assembly. A former open hearth worker at the U.S. Steel Corporation, Carney served a number of years on the Girard City Council. Carney decided to run against Senator Bishop Kilpatrick in 1972, a Democrat who had served in Columbus since 1935. In a major upset, Carney defeated Kilpatrick for the Democratic nomination, and went on to win the seat in November. Carney won reelection easily in 1976, and 1980.
