Tristram (“Tris”) Potter Coffin (February 13, 1922 – January 31, 2012) was a folklorist and leading scholar of ballad texts in the 20th century. Dr. Coffin spent the bulk of his career at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) where he was a full professor of English and a co-founder of the Folklore Department. He is the author of 20 books and more than 100 scholarly articles and reviews.
