William J. Sharkey (c.1847 – after 1873) was a convicted murderer and minor New York City politician who earned national notoriety in the late 19th century for escaping from a New York City prison disguised as a woman. He subsequently fled to Cuba, which was a part of Spain at the time, and Spain had no extradition treaty with the United States (until 1970). He was never captured and his ultimate fate is unknown.
